First Grade News
Our first graders are having a very busy fall season! The children are completing end of trimester assessments in reading, writing, and math. They have certainly learned a lot of new information this trimester! We are looking forward to meeting with all of our parents during our Parent/Teacher Conferences in November, to share our assessment data and work samples, and to set learning goals for the second trimester.
In our classrooms, the children are working really hard learning how to read. They are memorizing the first grade sight words and learning how to sound out words. It is so exciting to see the children gaining independence and fluency while they read!
In writing, we are working on writing paragraphs that have topic sentences, supporting details, and concluding sentences. The children are writing narrative, informative, and opinion pieces. They are learning to make their stories interesting and exciting!
In math, we are working on solving addition and subtraction problems to 20, and we are working towards memorizing the math facts to 10. The children are reading, writing, and counting numbers to 100. They are learning to use tens and ones to describe and understand large numbers. We are also graphing, learning how to measure the length of objects, and learning how to solve challenging word problems and explain their thinking. They are really becoming thoughtful mathematicians!
As Thanksgiving is approaching, we would like to take the opportunity to give thanks to all of our wonderful first grade parents at Cooper School. We appreciate all of your help and support this year. We couldn’t do this important work without you! Thank you, and we wish everyone a very happy holiday season!
